Christine Miaskowski, RN, PhD, FAAN, is a Professor and Associate Dean of the Physiological Nursing Department at the University of California, San Francisco. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y., and later was awarded a master's degree in nursing from Adelphi University in Garden. In 1979, she received a master's degree in biology and went on to attain a Ph.D. in physiology from St. John's University.

A former president of the American Pain Society, Dr. Miaskowski is an internationally recognized expert on pain management. She has received many awards, including the Helen Nahm Distinguished Research Lecturer Award, the Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award from the Oncology Nursing Society, the Wilbert Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award, the Distinguished Merit Award from the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care, the Distinguished Service Award from the APS in 2005 and the Distinguished Researcher Award from the Western Institute of Nursing Research in 2006.

A frequent lecturer, Dr. Miaskowski also has published numerous articles, chapters, and monographs on pain medicine, oncology, nursing and related clinical topics. Dr. Miaskowski is also involved in numerous research programs that focus on the evaluation of unrelieved pain and the development of strategies to improve the management of pain as well as the evaluation of gender differences in response to analgesic medications.
